Anthropology and the EnvironmentNovember 1999Ed Liebow, Contributing Editor I'm getting organized for the Annual Meeting in Chicago in a few weeks, and I am impressed by the Program's richness, especially what it offers to environmental specialists. I wonder if it is too late to sue for repealing the laws of physics that prevent us from being in two places at once. The Program features a large number of papers reviewed by A&E, according to this year's A&E Program Chair Alx Dark. A&E is sponsoring two invited sessions: Thursday (Nov 18) afternoon's "Taking Time to Communicate: Anthropology and Conservation in Southeast Asia and the Pacific," organized by Jamon Halvaksz and Paige West, and Friday (Nov 19) afternoon's "Anthropology and Marine Policy: The Closing Frontier in Fisheries" organized by Shirley Fiske and Bonnie McCay. As you can see by some selected highlights below, nearly every time slot throughout the five-day Program features sessions of related interest. You also will want to consider sessions sponsored or reviewed by Culture and Agriculture, and the meeting of the Council on Anthropology and Education's Committee on Culture, Ecology and Education. The A&E Business Meeting will be held on Friday (Nov 19) from 12:15 - 1:30 pm. On hand will be new President-Elect Bonnie McCay, along with newly elected Executive Committee members Melissa Johnson and Sandra Crismon. We will acknowledge this year's winners of the Rappaport Student Paper Competition, Loretta Ann Cormier for her paper "Monkey as Food, Monkey as Child: Symbolic Cannibalism of the Guaja of Maranhao, Brazil," and Marsha Brofka, whose paper is entitled "A Place for Class In Environmental Discourse."
